Discuss Miren here so I can keep the main thread clean!

I am conflicted. Very conflicted.

I know your writing. I am super confident that you'll write something really good.

I am also very sure that I will probably not enjoy reading about a number of topics that you mentioned in the content warnings.

So while originally the Flame Emote was meant as "Heck yeah, Tal-Novel!" I feel like I might put in some flames with a meaning closer to "oh, I have the feeling we'll need that for some characters..."

If it helps, this is absolutely not a tragedy. The story does have a happy ending, but it is earned. It starts getting a bit brighter in the next chapter.

I'll give explicit warnings before bad chapters - anything worse than this one. There won't be too many so it won't be constant.

Whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.

I love that you interweve some relevant bits of what Miren looks like (that she has a tail and horns) into the text at logical places instead of having her randomly encounter a mirror and then spend ten minutes pondering her own appearance (as too many fantasy novels do)

But Hekx, it's very important for the plot that female characters stare at a mirror and then poetically describe their own boobs for 2 paragraphs :gh:

More seriously, I'm curious why this smith sells presumably magical swords in a place where magic seems to be taboo. I guess that bit of world building will be elaborated on later.

I am so tempted to add a mirror in her room and then not have her look at it.

More seriously, it makes sense. It's very difficult to get a character to describe their own appearance in a way that's reasonable, and unless you get it into the reader's mind very early on, they're going to develop an image of the character that doesn't actually match what's in your head, and there may be friction or outright refusal to integrate if you introduce it too late.

In Miren's case, only a few things are plot-relevant (as far as I'm aware, at this stage of writing):

  1. She has horns, and even though they curve along the shape of her head, she cannot use a hood as a disguise.
  2. She has feet, not goat hooves.
  3. She has strawberry-blonde hair.

wait is this license for me to talk about MIREN'S MASSIVE MOMMY MILKERS :doge:

no actually though, they are not magical. but that and why they're allowed to exist would be explained later where it feels less like an info dump.

EDIT: I meant mana-veined swords are not magical, not miren's mommy milkers. those might be, but it remains to be seen

For a moment I was wondering if Everet might be half-human, but I suppose it's a little too early for that kind of thing.

I can neither confirm nor deny, but I'm definitely very curious about what spurred that idea.

Mostly just the way he reacted to her speaking in public. It's not very substantiated.

I didn't feel it appropriate to delve into social and cultural etiquette that early into the book. Would've felt infodumpy.
